"The avalanche risk assessment bulletin was four out of five," the gendarmes said. On Monday, Guillaume Mulliez, a member of the powerful family of entrepreneurs in the North who owns Auchan and Decathlon, among others, died in an avalanche in Modane (Savoie), said the entourage of the family, confirming information from BFMTV.

"Four skiers were going from the resort of Valfréjus towards the pass of the Narrow Valley (Maurienne) to reach a refuge on the Italian side" when the avalanche occurred around 13 p.m., said the CRS confirming a death in an avalanche, without details on the identity of the victim. "A snowy mountain section left and they were caught in a flow at an altitude of 2,390 meters, continue the gendarmes. One of the four hikers was buried and quickly found and taken out but unfortunately the doctor was unable to revive him."

The Mulliez family, in eighth position of the greatest French fortunes

Aged 61, Guillaume Mulliez was one of the descendants of Louis Mulliez, who was "one of the founders of the ecosystem of the Mulliez Family Association that led to the creation of Auchan", according to the family's entourage. He was a distant cousin of Gérard Mulliez, founder of Auchan.

After working for Phildar, the knitting yarn company founded in 1922 in Roubaix by Louis Mulliez, Guillaume Mulliez created Dimo Software, a management software company for companies. With 22 billion euros in 2022, the Mulliez family was in eighth position of the largest French fortunes, according to Challenges.
