Eight months later, the investigation is progressing. The main suspect, behind the assault of three police officers by a hostile crowd in July 2022, in the Guillotière district of Lyon, was arrested and placed in custody, said a judicial source.

Aged 19, the man in an irregular situation, must be presented this Monday at the hearing of the immediate appearances of the judicial court of Lyon for "theft in assembly", "theft with violence" and "rebellion". He is to be tried for a robbery in flagrante delicto committed last Thursday in Vénissieux, as well as for theft and aggravated violence against police officers.

A case that had provoked many reactions

Already convicted of theft, the individual was actively sought. On July 20, 2022, three plainclothes police officers had pursued him after the theft of a necklace, in a street in the working-class district of the 7th arrondissement of Lyon.

While they had subdued him, the police had been violently attacked by a hostile crowd. They had been hit and projectiled. Two police officers were injured and the suspect in the robbery fled. A video of this scene of violence had circulated on social networks. The case provoked political reactions and polemics, making the Guillotière district a security issue.

The Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin had welcomed the arrest of a first suspect, under an obligation to leave the territory (OQTF). Once this suspect was cleared, he wrote, in a second tweet: "In connection with the events or not, known for many accusations [...], this individual has nothing to do in our country." Three individuals are finally indicted in the judicial investigation opened after this scene of violence and closed on February 22.

In connection with the events or not, known for many accusations: theft, violence, death threats against a person holding public authority, possession of drugs, violence in assembly ... This individual has no place in our country, which is generous if we respect him https://t.co/UMetCoe3zf

The lawyer of the police officers constituted civil party, Me Laurent Bohé, "welcomes" this latest arrest. "The police are relieved to learn that this individual has been arrested. The case will be able to be completely and serenely examined by the judges," he said.
