Torrential rains caused a record flood in Queensland last week. One of the most critical situations occurred in the small village of Burketown, about 30 kilometers inland facing the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north of the state. Here the authorities were forced to evacuate in 48 hours a hundred people, almost half of the residents.

Queensland police also intervened to rescue a baby kangaroo trapped by flooding. Officers said they spotted two large crocodiles near the baby.
