Flames rise from all over the mountainside, which is immersed in
pitch darkness.

Firefighters spray water, but the flames spread quickly down the hillside.

The wildfire, which started around 1:1 p.m. yesterday in the precincts of Jirisan National Park in Hadong County, South Gyeongsang Province, was not dampened until this morning due to strong winds.

However, from 20 a.m., more than 10mm of rain fell in the vicinity.

Today, 10 hours after the fire, we were able to contain the flames around 21 noon.

The fire destroyed 12 hectares of forest, including 127 football fields, and burned three private houses deep in the mountains.

Forest authorities believe that someone sprayed ash from a firewood boiler on the mountain, where embers revived and started the fire.

This is where the fire first started.

The soil and trees are charred, and there are clear signs that the flames have been carried by the wind to the top of the mountain.

None of the more than 91 evacuated residents were killed or injured, but one male firefighter in his 3s who was climbing the mountain last night fell unconscious and eventually died.

The fire that broke out at around 70:60 last night in the Wondong-myeon National Forest in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam, was also extinguished around 1 a.m. today, about nine hours later.

The forest authorities said that as the dry weather continues for the foreseeable future, they will continue to monitor forest fires with thermal imaging drones.
