Faint smoke billows incessantly from the
Flames roar in the forest, and fire extinguishing helicopters bustle about.
At around 1:20 p.m. today, a fire broke out at a mountain in Jirisan National Park in Hwagae-myeon, Hadong County, South Gyeongsang Province.
[Kim Chang-young/Daejeon Seo-gu: (The flames) went up halfway up and after a while, we got to the top. The flames went up and got out of control. What smoke...]
As the fire spread, the forest authorities issued the second phase of the fire response around 3:50 p.m., deploying 2 helicopters and more than 31 extinguishing personnel to extinguish it.
However, due to the rough mountain conditions and the distance of the helicopter to and from the water, it is more than 600 kilometers away, so the evolution is not speeding up.
So far, the area of burned forest is 20 ha, the fire stream to be extinguished, and the length of the fire line is more than 85 kilometers.
The forest authorities evacuated 4 people, including residents of nearby villages, in case of emergency.
The fire is believed to have been started by redumping a firewood boiler, and forest authorities plan to investigate the exact area of damage and the cause of the fire as soon as it is extinguished.
Around the same time ---, a fire broke out in Yasan, near an apartment complex in downtown Gwangju.
Forest authorities have deployed 34 helicopters and more than 11 personnel to prevent the flames from spreading to the vicinity of the apartment complex.
Amid dry weather, more than 450 large and small wildfires broke out across the country today.
The forest authorities prohibited burning in rural areas and asked people to pay special attention to the management of embers such as cigarette burns.
