• Extremadura Immobilized up to nine brands of fraudulent oil from Andalusia

More than 10,000 liters of olive oil have been withdrawn from the market to date by the Extremadura health authority -especially

in the province of Badajoz-

since the alarm went off after the complaint by two consumers who allegedly purchased olive oil virgin but whose characteristics presented serious alterations in flavor, color, smell and consistency in almost a dozen brands of this product

from Andalusia and also from Portugal

, as has been known today.

Being already a sufficiently large quantity, further immobilization of this adulterated oil in the near future is not ruled out, taking into account that it is being investigated whether it could have been sold from a warehouse in Extremadura to other autonomous communities such as Madrid, the Balearic Islands or the Basque Country

.

.

This has been confirmed this Friday by the deputy director of Food Quality of the Board,

Santiago Malpica

, he explained that they are working together with the Civil Guard and the Institute of Consumption to find out if "timely" these sales were made to these areas of Spain.

The indications about the origin of the fraud lie right now with the Andalusian company that would have marketed this product, called

Don Jaén Aceite 2019

, and eight other different brands would have benefited from this alleged fraud.

The investigation focuses on five-liter bottles that have been sold in small businesses in Extremadura.

Specifically, the oil suspected of fraud is widely distributed and it is very difficult to trace it because it has been sold mainly in markets, gas stations and small stores, and not in large stores.

The five-liter bottles were sold at a

much cheaper price than the usual market price

, also taking advantage of the large price increase for this product to the public in this last campaign.

According to Malpica, the Andalusian packaging company under suspicion had a sanitary registry in its day to be able to operate in the market but it was deregistered, "so it is

clandestine and does not have sanitary control

, and that alone is already a reason for immobilization", it has stressed.

So far, according to the Extremadura Health Service,

no problem has been detected in consumers

who have consumed it throughout Extremadura, although the results of the analyzes of these products are awaiting to confirm more data.

The main hypothesis is that it is a mixture of oils to deceive consumers but what the companies investigated would face a crime of fraud.

Thus, in addition to the fact that there are containers that are mislabeled, with a registration number

that does not exist

, marketing in Extremadura would have been carried out from Andalusia but also other brands from Portugal, with a registration number from that country.

When this was detected by the health authorities, the Spanish Food Health Agency was transferred to contact the Portuguese authorities.

Message of tranquility to the population

Another thing is that, for example, the analyzes show that there are components, such as lamp oils, that

are not suitable for human consumption

, so the case would already be investigated as a crime against Public Health.

The Civil Guard is also investigating the case.

The SES maintains that the most appropriate thing at this time is

not to consume the brands of this oil

and to contact your health center if you have a bottle at home.

It must be remembered that the Board disseminated the names of these brands: Acebuche, Virgen del Guadiana, Cortijo del Oro, La Campiña de Andalucía, Galiaceite 2022, La Abadía, Villa de Jerez, Don Jaén Aceite 2019 and Imperio Andaluz, although suspicion is growing that

even greater numbers

might be involved .

The deputy director of Food and Environmental Safety of the Extremadura Health Service (SES), Santiago Malpica, has trusted today that the oil requisitioned by the regional administration does not pose any type of risk to health: "In principle, we would not be facing a health problem, but fraud because a product such as extra virgin olive oil has been sold when in reality it would be a

mixture of oils of different qualities

, which would be suitable for consumption", he said.

Malpica has specified that if among the oils detected in the mislabeled five-liter bottles were the so-called lampante, which is not suitable for human consumption, it would not cause harm to health either.

This responds to the fact that the prohibition of its use is only due to the fact that "it is an oil

of very poor quality and it has a bad taste

".

For this reason, she has sent a message of "tranquility" to the population.
