It is in the privacy of their home in Montecito, California, and in small committee, that Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, chose to baptize their daughter, Lilibet Diana, aged 21 months. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed the news via a statement to People, and with a notable difference in the child's qualification.

"Princess Lilibet Diana was christened Friday, March 3, by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, Rev. John Taylor," he said.

A source told the magazine that the couple had invited King Charles III, Camilla, Queen Consort, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, to the ceremony, but that they would not have deigned to make the trip. Perhaps in response, the four members of the royal family regularly fed their social networks with their respective activities, all related to their duties to the British crown.

In any case, this is the first time that the youngest child of the couple is publicly called "princess". When Lilibet was born, in June 2021, she did not have access to this title because she was not the granddaughter of the monarch at the time. This right was obtained following the accession to the throne of his grandfather, King Charles III, in September 2022.

An embarrassing baptism for Buckingham?

For its part, Buckingham Palace did not seem in a hurry to review their files. The king's representatives said just after the Sussexes' announcement that the royal family's website would be "updated in due course" to reflect the new titles of Princess Lilibet and her brother Archie, born in May 2019.

Since mid-morning, those who were mentioned, in order of succession on the official website of the British royalty, such as "Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor" and "Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor", are now "Prince Archie of Sussex" and "Princess Lilibet of Sussex". It remains to be seen if this is yet another outstretched hand from Charles III to his son, or if the crown wanted to avoid a new clash with the one who continues to unpack all his malaise of having grown up under the royal golds.
