A house in Heungdeok-myeon,
Gochang-gun.

At around 23 p.m. yesterday (5rd), a Thai couple in their 50s who were illegal immigrants were found dead in their room.

The two met while working in South Korea more than 10 years ago and have been living in this house since July last year through the introduction of a neighbor.

The fire pit in the yard is littered with food cans written in Thai.

The two, who lived in the green house during the day, reportedly escaped the cold and entered the house here to light a fire.

At the time of discovery, the gas cylinder was empty and the gas boiler was broken.

Police believe he was poisoned by carbon monoxide while heating firewood in his room.

[Gochang Police Station official: I think I've been burning firewood indoors all this time. It was very cold. This time I couldn't ventilate a little...]

The couple has been paid a daily wage to do the farming work for the villagers.

Neighbors lament that they worked diligently to support the children and parents they left behind in Thailand.

[Vaccine machine/villager: I earn money to teach my sons and daughters in my hometown, and I will send money to my father-in-law and mother-in-law, but it's so sad that this happened so suddenly.]

Police plan to discuss follow-up procedures with their families in Thailand.
