The corona incidence in Germany has continued to rise at a relatively low level. The value had increased last week compared to the previous week again by eleven percent, wrote the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in its Covid-19 report of Thursday evening. The information is based on reported cases with corona laboratory detection.

The further development depends on various factors, wrote the RKI. It is "currently difficult to predict" in view of the further relaxation of measures and major events, especially with regard to influenza and Covid-19.

Share of the dominant Okron line is declining

According to random samples, the share of the long-dominant Okronon line BA.5 continues to decline in the corona variants, to 50 percent the week before last. "The share of XBB.1 including sublines increased to 26 percent, the share of BA.2 including sublines was 21 percent," it said.

There is no conclusive explanation for the current variety of variants, said Richard Neher, head of the research group Evolution of Viruses and Bacteria at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, on dpa request.

But he thinks it is plausible that the advantage of each particular new variant will be smaller because different people have now been infected and/or vaccinated with different variants. "As a result, new variants do not grow as quickly on the one hand, and on the other hand, they often do not prevail 100 percent," explained Neher.
