"La Russa's words are unacceptable, they exude superficiality and prejudice. It is embarrassing that the second office of the State has an idea of a backward country and does not realize that this is throwing fuel on the fire of homophobia to the detriment of the LGBTQI + community", reads the social networks of Azione.

"The statements of the President of the Senate are serious. And totally inadequate to the role it holds. Every representative of the institutions should serve the state with discipline and honor. La Russa, on the other hand, does the opposite", writes the president of the Emilia Romagna region Stefano Bonaccini on Twitter.

"The only disaster for Italian families is to have the second office of the State that makes homophobic, sexist, and nostalgic statements demonstrating the total inadequacy to the institutional role it holds", reads the post of the candidate for the secretariat of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein.

"President La Russa, having a gay child is not a regret at all. The displeasure is to have in plain sight busts of the Duce and boast about them. It is to feel nostalgia for those who eliminated political opponents, enacted racial laws, canceled all democratic freedom and deported thousands of our compatriots, some of them children, to concentration camps. It is decided not to celebrate April 25. It is not loving your children for who they are and not for what you would like them to be. The regret, Ignazio La Russa, is that it is precisely you who inadequately represent the second office of the State. We are proud and happy not to look like her", writes More Europe on its social channels.

Ignazio La Russa responds to the controversy: "I read about many criticisms that come from those who have not even seen the program, since it airs tonight, without understanding the context. To a specific question I replied that having a gay child would be a small regret, but not a problem. Then it really happened to me: one of my sons went to the stadium to see Milan, and for me it was a small regret, nothing more."
