If, in several countries of the world, Mardi Gras rhymes with carnival, in Nantes, carnival parades usually take place in April. The next edition of the Nantes event will be no exception since it will take place from 2 to 15 April. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the national recognition of this carnival that is more than a century old. The Ministry of Culture announced at the end of last week its decision to include it in the inventory of national intangible cultural heritage, reports the city of Nantes. This national inventory aims to list and promote important French "social and festive practices".

"This announcement is recognition of a tradition in Nantes dating back nearly a century and a half. Revived by Aimé Delrue after the Second World War, it strongly marked the Nantes territory. It is also and above all a great recognition for all the volunteers who put their passion and know-how at the service of the carnival," says Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes.

We learn about the inclusion of the #Nantes #Carnaval in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage. It is the recognition of a tradition that continues thanks to our carnival lovers. Thank you to them and to the NEMO association. RV in April to celebrate! 🎊🇪🇺https://t.co/ST49C1xCUs pic.twitter.com/sr1H2g3GmN

European Carnival Capital

Composed of themed floats, big heads, dancers and musicians, the carnival of Nantes is free to access. It attracts an average of 50,000 spectators for its day parade (opening) and as much for its night parade (closing). A children's ball is also offered in between.

The 2023 edition promises to be special as Nantes has also been named European Carnival Capital for this year.
