Bodour Al Qasimi: Protecting Intellectual Property Boosts Creativity

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the American University of Sharjah, said: "Protecting intellectual property has a direct impact on promoting innovation and creativity, and building thriving societies and economies around the world, but intellectual property faces several challenges that require joint strategic action from stakeholders, governments, and legal entities."

This came during a meeting with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, who accompanied him on a series of visits to a number of knowledge and creative institutions in the emirate, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides to achieve common goals and benefit from intellectual property in advancing innovation and creativity.

As part of a series of visits to Sharjah's knowledge and innovation industry destinations, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi accompanied WIPO Director General on a visit to Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park, followed by a tour of the park's facilities to learn about the innovative events and activities and the incubating environment it offers to leading companies in the free zone of the park, including startups supported by the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa), where the founders of the companies shared their visions with Daren Tang on the protection of intellectual property, and ways to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency. and its flexibility to suit the needs of society based on knowledge and information and communication technology.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi accompanied the Director General of WIPO on a visit to the House of Wisdom, where Daren Tang held a meeting with officials of the Emirates Intellectual Property Association and Kalimat Foundation, and listened to their visions on intellectual property from a group of experts and specialists in this field.

Bodour Al Qasimi added: "Our meetings today come at a time when transformations are accelerating and challenges are escalating, and therefore we seek through these meetings to turn challenges into opportunities to enhance the importance of intellectual property and translate its contribution into a tangible economic and social impact that supports the establishment of a balanced, inclusive and forward-looking system in Sharjah, the UAE and the world."

Darren Tang said: "During my visit, I was briefed on the great support provided by the UAE to promote entrepreneurship and an innovation-based economy, and I thank Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi for our fruitful discussions and all her efforts to protect intellectual property based on innovation and creativity in the UAE, and it was a pleasure to meet young entrepreneurs to talk about ways to use intellectual property to transfer their ideas to market."

He added: "I have seen the great effort that Kalimat Foundation is doing to reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, in addition to the efforts made by those in charge of (House of Wisdom) to ensure that intellectual property supports the creative industries."
