Forty students blocked Monday morning a campus of the University Lumière Lyon 2, in Bron, where classes were canceled for the day, announced officials of the faculty. The students began their action at 6:30 am on the Porte des Alpes campus, blocking access to the faculty with garbage cans, barriers and fences, to protest against the pension reform and demand meals at one euro for all students, a measure that was rejected by the National Assembly on February 9.

"We have closed the campus because the reception conditions are not met, including security and firefighter access," said Sandrine Barberino, in charge of press relations at the University Lumière Lyon 2.

Autonomous group

"We wanted to mark this day back to college [after the winter break] by blocking the campus and taking the time to talk with the other students. [...] We are neither a collective nor a union, rather an autonomous group," says Noa, 19. Tags have flourished on the walls of the campus demanding "more resources for colleges", meals at one euro or a fairer pension reform for women.

Alice Petitot, 18, in her first year of a bachelor's degree in political science, discovered the blockage when she arrived on campus. She regrets missing a "fairly important" course but says she understands the movement: "We know that it is only through this type of action that things can change."

Amina Salah, 21, in her second year with a bachelor's degree in education and who comes by train from La Verpillière (Isère), learned that classes had been cancelled had almost arrived. "We were not notified until 7:20 this morning" by an email from the university. "Who checks his emails at this time?" laments the young woman.

The protesters said they had not yet made a decision on how to proceed with their movement.
