Spike Lee strongly disagrees with the Grammys and makes it known! The American filmmaker and producer, very committed to the fight against racism since its beginnings, believes that it is Beyoncé's Renaissance record that should have won the trophy for album of the year.

However, Spike Lee does not disparage former One Direction member Harry Styles or previous One Direction winners like Adele, because "it's not their fault", as he explains to the Guardian. In question, therefore, the system that privileges some to the detriment of black artists.

A problem

It is clear that in 65 ceremonies, the Grammy Awards have elected only 11 albums of the year sung by black artists. And it is also interesting to note that of these 11, there are three women: Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill and Natalie Cole.

"We all know their work is great, because art speaks for itself. But we always come back to this delicate territory of validation. Do black artists say "Oh" or do they seek validation from white people and chase prizes? I just want to wink at my sister Beyoncé. We know what's going on. It is downright scam, fraud, subterfuge. Or as the English say: it's rubbish! " adds the director of Malcolm X.

Nevertheless, if Beyoncé has never won the album of the year at the Grammys while being regularly nominated, she became, in 2023, the most awarded artist by the Recording Academy in history with a total of 32 gramophones.
