It was his girlfriend who raised the alarm, worried not to see him return. A 44-year-old man, from Vendée, was found dead Wednesday in the Hautes-Pyrénées by mountain rescuers of the CRS of Gavarnie.

This base-jumper had jumped from a cliff in the Pibeste massif. According to the first elements of the police investigation, he would have made mistakes during his jump. The forty-year-old died instantly after falling from the rocky point from a height of 30 to 50 meters.

Base-jumping is an extreme sport that consists of parachuting from a high point, whether from a cliff in the mountains, a building or a bridge.

Every year, fatal accidents are recorded in France, especially on "spots" such as the Millau viaduct, as last November, and which is nevertheless the subject of a ban by prefectural decree.
