THE ESSENTIALS

  • The unions are organizing this Thursday their fifth day of mobilization against the pension reform to maintain pressure on deputies whose debates in the Assembly could skip the postponement of the legal age by Friday midnight.
  • However, the unions reserve themselves for the day of March 7, the inter-union having called to "put the France to a halt", an action supported by 58% of the French according to an Elabe poll for BFMTV.
  • In the middle of the school holidays, with the exception of Ile-de-France and Occitanie, participation in strikes is expected to decline sharply. After a Saturday that mobilized 963,000 demonstrators according to the authorities, the police say they expect between 450 and 650,000 people in the street, including 40 to 70,000 in Paris.
  • Disruptions are expected to be limited in transport, with 4 out of 5 TGVs in circulation and normal traffic in the Paris metro. Nevertheless, 30% of flights at Paris-Orly will be cancelled. And in energy, the hydroelectric plant of Grand'Maison (Isère), the most powerful in the country, was on strike on Wednesday.

Pension reform: Despite an unfavourable vote in the Assembly, the government wants to restore the senior index

09:40 : The number one unions in Albi

For once, the number ones of the eight main unions will demonstrate in Albi, symbol of this France of medium-sized cities very mobilized against the reform.

"We want to shine a spotlight on one of the hallmarks of this social movement. There is a France of work that wants to affirm that it exists, that there are not only metropolises, "says Laurent Berger in the magazine of the CFDT. In this city of 50,000 inhabitants, at least 6,000 people demonstrated on Saturday.

With the constant opposition of about seven out of ten French people to the reform according to polls - and a petition that has crossed the symbolic milestone of one million signatures - the unions intend to "maintain the pressure on the deputies", according to the secretary general of the CGT, Philippe Martinez.

09:30 : Fewer protesters expected by the police

After a Saturday that mobilized 963,000 demonstrators according to the authorities, the attendance should be less. Police say they expect between 450,650 and 000,40 people on the streets, including 70 to 000,<> in Paris.

09:20 : Why the government backpedals on the figure of 1,200 euros

Over the course of the various passages on the sets, the members of the government were caught in the act of lying on the question of the minimum pension at 1,200 euros. All the explanations in our article:

09:05: Many amendments withdrawn by the left

Time is running out for MPs who, after several days of fruitless tug-of-war, are approaching the final stretch of their debates until Friday midnight, the cut-off time for the examination of the text before its transmission to the Senate.

To speed up, the left has decided to withdraw many amendments but there are still nearly 11,000 to discuss, including a good part before Article 7.

There is "a possible majority in the hemicycle to vote against", wants to believe the deputy PS Philippe Brun, who hopes to "pass to the vote as soon as possible" on this key point. The leader of the communist group André Chassaigne, however, detects "a de facto alliance" between the majority and the oppositions to avoid a vote.

According to him, the government "is not sure of itself", especially since the rejection of article 2 on Tuesday on the senior index, there is "a malaise" among LR deputies and on the left, some at LFI fear that if article 7 is voted, "it is a blow to the social movement".

08:42 : A little more than 3,000 MW of decreases in electricity production overnight

EDF employees, on strike against the pension reform project, proceeded tonight to many cuts in electricity production, of just over 3,000 MW, the equivalent of three nuclear reactors, we learned from the CGT and EDF.

The nuclear power plants of Saint-Alban (Isère), Paluel (Seine-Maritime), Tricastin (Drôme), Flamanville (Manche), Gravelines (Nord) and the Martigues thermal power plant have made these load reductions, according to EDF's website, without causing power cuts for customers.

"We have demonstrated that we can be everywhere and therefore we are ready for the France to stop" and the national day of action on March 7, told AFP Fabrice Coudour, federal secretary of the energy branch of the CGT.

08:22: "We need this support from the street," says Marine Le Pen

"I am in favour of all peaceful demonstrations that make it clear to the government that the vast majority of French people are opposed to this pension reform. And we need this support from the street, we MEPs who are fighting against this reform, because it is an essential and complementary element of parliamentary debate. It will block part of the country but it will be the responsibility of the government," Marine Le Pen said on RTL this morning.
