The Smiths were heading for their fourth straight opening loss of the season, against the Pirates, but turned to victory 46-44 after a fifth in the final heat. The Smiths' Robert Lambert took the start ahead of teammate Jaimon Lidsey and was able to hold off Pirates' Przemyslaw Pawlicki, who challenged hardest, and Vaclav Milik.

It was a mixture of relief and joy in Eskilstuna after the last heat, what decided everything. Two fives for the Pirates in heats 12 and 13 sensationally turned the match around.
