The German national ice hockey players have reached their first stage goal at the World Cup. The team of national coach Harold Kreis won against France 5-0 at the end of the preliminary round and moved into the quarter-finals.

The success allowed them to qualify for the knockout phase for the sixth time in seven years. The Swiss, who have been top of Group B since Sunday, still have a few scores to settle with the German team. The "preliminary round world champions" have won 16 World Cup group matches in a row across all tournaments.
