The German national ice hockey players have reached their first stage goal at the World Cup. The team of national coach Harold Kreis won against France 5-0 at the end of the preliminary round and moved into the quarter-finals.

The success allowed them to qualify for the knockout phase for the sixth time in seven years. The Swiss, who have been top of Group B since Sunday, still have a few scores to settle with the German team. In order to qualify directly for the Winter Games in Milan/Cortina, the DEB selection would have to overtake Switzerland or Slovakia in the world rankings.
