The Slam Dunk comic and its animated series took East Asia by storm at the end of the 20th century. Manga author Yuhiko Inoue gave the concept of "firsts" to the film more than 20 years later, hoping to give it to fans and friends who are watching the story for the first time.

The film, which was not favored by the industry before its release, won nearly 5 million box office in 4 days of its release in Chinese mainland, becoming the first-week box office champion of Japanese animated films in Chinese film history.
