The situation in Khartoum exploded a day after mediators from the leaders of the armed movements announced their success in avoiding an imminent military confrontation. The leaders of these movements said the two sides responded to the initiative and pledged to de-escalate.

The army accused the Rapid Support Forces of mobilizing and deploying inside the capital Khartsoum and a number of cities. Analysts believe that regional efforts backed by Washington and Western capitals will be the most likely to calm the situation and revive the political process in Sudan.
