Ximo Puig is frequently included in the group of PSOE barons critical of the management of Pedro Sánchez. The president of the Generalitat Valenciana supported Susana Díaz in the primaries in which he faced the current secretary general of the party.

Puig has not missed the opportunity to re-express his disagreement from the "respect" for the cut of the Tajo-Segura transfer approved by the central government at the request of the third vice president, Teresa Ribera.
