The Japanese merchant ship Montevideo Maru has been found at the bottom of the South China Sea. The ship was sunk during World War II, carrying over 1,000 prisoners of war when it sank.

Found at a depth of over 4,000 meters just northwest of the Philippine island of Luzon. Around 850 of the more than1,000 people who died on the ship were from Australia, according to the Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles. The majority of Australians were on board the ship at the time.
