Herpesviruses are a family of viruses that include, among others, herpes simplex viruses type 1 and type 2 and varicella zoster virus. When we talk about the herpes virus, we refer to the virus that causes cold sores.

The first symptom suffered by a patient with shingles is a burning, intense, stabbing pain in the area where theShingles rash will appear. Up to 30% of patients continue to suffer pain for at least 3 months after the rash disappears, which is known as postherpetic neuralgia.
