French government wants to increase criminal penalties for attacks on elected officials. Punishments will go up to seven years imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 euros.

The government also plans to create a network of more than 3,400 "referents against elected officials" in police stations and gendarmeries. "These referents will be the gateways for elected officials to free speech," said the minister's entourage, explaining that "many mayors do not dare to talk about the violence to which they are subjected"
