The question of women's suffrage had been under consideration for several years. Until now, only one woman, the French nun Nathalie Becquart, could vote on the final resolutions taken at this assembly.

The next meeting in October, organized on the theme of "synodality", will now have 70 of its members who are not bishops, 50% of whom are women. These members, all of whom will have the right to vote, will be chosen by Pope Francis himself.
