Joe Biden will not "negotiate" with Republicans on an increase in the debt ceiling. US Congress must approve or risk default by the world's largest economy.

US president has proposed a meeting on May 9 with the main leaders of Congress, Democrats and Republicans. The US government reached its $31 trillion ceiling in mid-January, and could default by June 1 if it does not get a green light from Congress. The Republican opposition for its part is demanding cuts in public spending in exchange for its agreement to an increase.
