Camus Olewa was first discovered in 2016, using the Pan-Stars telescope at the Halyakala Observatory. Scientists believe it belonged to the moon at some point in Earth's history, and that it was displaced from the moon's orbit as a result of the gravitational effects of the sun and Earth.

In future, scientists are seeking to study craters on the moon to find out which ones originated from Camu Olewa. There are many objects orbiting the Earth, estimated at 21 space objects, which scientists call quasi-satellite.
