Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has received an invitation to attend the United Nations climate conference (COP28) in Dubai in November. The UAE's invitation to the Syrian president comes after Arab countries resumed ties with Damascus and regained their seat in the Arab League.
It is also the first to attend an international conference attended by leaders of countries including those imposing sanctions on Damascus since the outbreak of the revolution in Syria in 2011. The World Climate Conference, organized by the U.N., usually brings together heads of state and heads of government.
