The release of a group of leaders of the former ruling National Congress Party in Sudan sparked widespread controversy in Khartoum. The army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have exchanged accusations about who is responsible for the release.

Some said that they left with the rest of the prisoners because of the lack of guards or basic services. The Central Council considered it part of a plan to return Islamists to power, while others see it as normal because they came out among thousands of others who escaped from prisons.
