South Sudanese President Salva Kiir is attempting to mediate between Generals al-Burhan and Hemedti in Sudan. On 2 May 2023, this dialogue resulted in an agreement in principle for a week-long truce.

The warring parties also agreed to "appoint their representatives for peace talks to be held in the place of their choosing" President Kiir stressed, in his exchanges with the generals in conflict, that the humanitarian situation was "rapidly deteriorating" and that de-escalation was "imperative"
