Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of prisoners seem to have escaped in recent days from several prisons, particularly in the Khartoum region. Among them are suspects of the most serious crimes committed under the former regime of Omar al-Bashir.

Ahmed Harun, former Minister of the Interior, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) since 2007 and accused of crimes against humanity in Darfur. Other escapes have been reported, such as in Soba, southeast of Khartsoum, where 6,000 detainees have escaped.
