The conflict between the government of Sudan and the rebels in the east of the country has been raging for more than a year. Both sides claim responsibility for the conflict, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

The U.S. government says the conflict is over the use of force by the Sudanese army against the rebels. But the U.N. says the situation has deteriorated since the start of the conflict in March 2011. The United Nations has called on all sides to work together to prevent the spread of the disease.
