The Swedish Transport Agency has decided to stop helicopter flights in certain parts of the Kiruna mountains in May. Laeva's and Gabna's Sami communities have applied for a flight ban in areas north of Kebnekaise and south of Abisko.
The Sami Communities want undisturbed areas because the reindeer are in their calving period. The agency has instead chosen to divide the areas applied for into smaller parts or sectors. They have also asked that the Sami. communities must announce the day before which parts will be closed to aviation because all sectors cannot be shut down at the same time.
