Spanish MPs on Thursday adopted a law aimed at curbing rising rents and solving the endemic housing crisis. The text, presented by the Spanish left-wing government as the "very first housing law" in Spain since the return of democracy in 1975, received the green light from 176 MPs, while 167 voted against and only one abstained.

The bill must now be passed by the Senate. The executive hopes for a rapid adoption so that the text can enter into force before the regional and municipal elections of May 28.
