China's Standing Committee has amended the Espionage Law that make those who communicate with organizations that serve foreign interests liable to legal accountability. The changes will take effect in July, but Chinese authorities are wasting no time and have arrested a Japanese businessman and questioned employees of a U.S.

company in Shanghai. In recent months, Chinese authorities have arrested dozens of its nationals and foreigners on suspicion of espionage, including the director of Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma Inc. In such cases, the trial is held in closed sessions for the sake of confidentiality.
