The election comes as part of the celebration of the first centenary of the Turkish Republic. It is not known whether former Finance Minister Mehmet Simk will return to the political scene. The next municipal elections are scheduled for the end of the summer of 2024, after the elections in Turkey's second largest city, Istanbul.
