The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) overnight transformed from a military force awaiting integration into the Sudanese army into a rebel force. After which the capital Khartoum turned into a fierce battleground between the country's two largest military forces.

The RSF is present in most states of Sudan, and all of them are adjacent to army barracks and headquarters. Their largest deployment is in the five states of Darfur, as the RSF was originally established to assist the army in its war in the western Darfur region in 2003.
