In December 2020, the Moscow Diocesan Court banned Andrei Kuraev from serving as a priest. The court said he had not shown "signs of repentance" and should return to the priesthood.
In August 2022, the court again banned him from serving, this time for two years. He was also banned from serving in the Russian army, which he had been serving in since 2007. The ban was imposed on him by the Russian Orthodox Church, which said he was a danger to the church.
