Police in the Philippines rescued more than 1,000 people who were being held captive and forced to carry out online scams. The 1,090 people held captive were mainly Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesians lured to the Philippines under miraculous promises of all kinds.

They also included Filipinos, Malaysians, Thais, Taiwanese, Hong Kongers, Burmese and Nepalese. Twelve people suspected of being at the head of this network were arrested. They are seven Chinese, four Indonesians and one Malaysian.
