A total of 782,000 people demonstrated Monday in France for the May 1 inter-union demonstration. For its part, the CGT claims 2.3 million demonstrators, including 550,000 in the capital, against a backdrop of protest against the pension reform.

Last year, 116,500 people marched in France, including 24,000 on May 1, according to the Interior Ministry. The Ministry of the Interior, however, remains more cautious, saying only 112,000 marched in Paris.
