Colorado-based Biofire Tech is receiving numerous requests for a smart pistol activated by facial recognition technology. The prototype developed by the company failed to fire twice when the company demonstrated it this week.

The malfunction was linked to the mechanical gun that was manufactured before the prototype was produced. The first consumer-ready versions of the 9mm pistol could be shipped to pre-ordered customers during the fourth quarter of this year, with a potential price tag of $1499, according to the report. Two other U.S. companies, LodeStar Works and Free State Firearms, are also trying to bring smart guns to market.
