Rome on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in the country for six months to deal with the recent influx of migrants on Italian shores. The measure makes it possible to release a fund of five million euros.

"It's a flow of migrants that doesn't seem to stop," said Natalia Mendoza, France 24's Rome correspondent. The first quarter of 2023 was the deadliest for migrants crossing the Mediterranean since 2017 with 441 lives lost trying to reach Europe, the UN said Wednesday.
