Iranian authorities say a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts tasked with appointing the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic was killed in an armed attack in the north of the country. Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani was assassinated in a shooting inside a bank in the northern city of Babolsar.

Governor Mahmud Hosseinpour said the incident was "not a terrorist incident" and that authorities were investigating the motives of the killer, who works as a security guard at the bank. He said the assailant was immediately arrested and is being interrogated by Iranian security forces.
