The Jeddah Declaration is seen as the first stage to end the ongoing armed confrontations. The agreement will not affect any legal, security or political status of the signatories.

It includes a ban on the use of civilians as human shields, and a promise to help the wounded and sick. It is expected to be implemented within 10 days, after a 10-day humanitarian truce is agreed on by both sides. The deal was signed by the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and the head of the African Union.
