Statements by a writer in a Turkish opposition newspaper in which he described the hijab as tyrannical to Turkish culture sparked angry reactions on social media platforms. The remarks also raised fears of growing Islamophobic rhetoric in Turkey as the second round of presidential elections approaches.

Tweeter Meryem Güzen said that what the writer Özdemir Ince is talking about is a further promotion of hate speech against Islam, or what is known as "Islamophobia" Erdal Yildiz commented on his Twitter account that such mentalities carried by Ince would destroy the country.
