Austria, France and the Netherlands are calling for stricter rules for private jets. In Germany, there is criticism that the federal government is not participating in the initiative.

The number of private flights in Europe increased by 64 percent last year to 572,806. Civil aviation is responsible for 13.4 percent of CO2 emissions in the EU's transport sector, according to the European Parliament, which is to be discussed at a meeting of EU transport ministers this Thursday in Luxembourg. The EU Commission is expected to discuss the issue at its next meeting in May.
