On Monday, France witnessed mass demonstrations against the new pension law. Police used water cannons to disperse demonstrators.

The number of participants reached 2.3 million, according to the General Confederation of Labour. The new law will raise the retirement age to 64, from 62, without a vote in the French parliament. It is the first time the law has been passed without a parliamentary vote in more than 30 years. The law is expected to be approved by the French Parliament in the next few weeks, but not before more protests are held.
