Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo surrendered on Friday to authorities in the United States. Toledo's latest effort to halt Washington's extradition proceedings to Peru on corruption charges against him failed.

Toledo, who served as president from 2001 to 2006, is expected to become the third former president of Peru to be jailed following a judicial conviction. He is accused of accepting a $35 million bribe from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for helping it obtain government contracts. If convicted, Toledo faces 20 years in prison, which Toledo denies.
