Spain is suffering from a catastrophic drought that worries farmers and authorities. The main farmers' union said 60 percent of Spain's farmland was currently "suffocating" Water storage facilities in Spain are only 50.1% of capacity, while in the Guadalquifer basin in Andalusia only 24.8% are located.

Spain also experienced an unusual early heatwave last week, with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in some places. The Spanish government asked the European Commission to activate the "crisis reserve" of the Common Agricultural Policy to help farmers.
